Homeless Experience

THE HOMELESS EXPERIENCE

I am 17 years old and a full-time student studying A-Levels at college. However, during my first year at college my dad was offered a better paid job by a Newcastle company. It meant only one thing; we would have to move from our home in Lancashire, Preston. I strongly felt comfortable at the college I am at, with lots of friends and good courses. I wanted to stay in Preston. This caused a lot of problems and heartache amongst my family so I decided to talk to a counsellor at college about any opportunities which would enable me to stay at college in Lancashire on my own. My counsellor introduced me to a scheme called S.L.E.A.P She arranged for a representative to come and visit me at college. From there on we arranged all the details and waited for a vacancy at a host's home where I could stay at for long term while I completed my A-Level studies.

The day arrived for me to meet a host who was willing to meet me. I felt quite nervous and apprehensive but once I had seen the home and met the host I felt comfortable. The host agreed I could stay until I finish my A-Levels and has made me feel welcome and part of the family.

Without this project I would have been lost as what to do but they have given me the biggest opportunity. I'm so grateful for their support, friendship and guidance. Now I am in my second year at college and am enjoying my new home life. I have got a bright future ahead of me thanks to all those on the S.L.E.A.P. project... and not forgetting, my new host family.
